The Angel of Užupis stands on an 8.5-metre pedestal blowing its horn and announcing the revival and the artistic freedom of the Užupis district to the world. The Angel of Užupis Square is the perfect place to bask in the sun, drink water from the fountain or have a coffee from a nearby cafe. You can also talk to the Angel, as it is a part of the city’s Talking Sculptures initiative. Just scan the QR code at the base of the sculpture and let the conversation begin. Every 1 April the community celebrates the independence of its district at the foot of the angel.

The Angel of Užupis was created to commemorate the patron of the Užupis district, Zenonas Šteinys. When the sculptor Romas Vilčiauskas couldn’t finish the sculpture on time for the unveiling ceremony, an egg was put in its place and the community was told that the Angel of Užupis would soon hatch. The sculpture was finally completed in 2002 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the independence of the district.
