The “Dignity of Earth & Sky,” often simply referred to as “Dignity,” is a stunning and evocative statue located in South Dakota. This monumental sculpture was created by artist Dale Lamphere to honor the cultures of the Lakota and Dakota people. Standing at a height of 50 feet, Dignity is an impressive figure of a Native American woman in Plains-style dress holding a quilt.
The sculpture is strategically positioned on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River at Chamberlain, South Dakota. It was dedicated on September 17, 2016, and is meant to serve as a symbol of respect and promise for the future. The quilt features 128 stainless steel blue diamond shapes designed to flutter in the wind, creating the impression of movement and representing the water that is so vital to life and the people who have lived in this region for generations.
Dignity stands on a site that is easily visible from Interstate 90 and has quickly become a beloved landmark. It represents the strength and endurance of the Native American peoples, as well as their traditions and connection to the land. The statue is not only a powerful work of art but also a moving tribute to the rich cultural heritage of the Lakota and Dakota nations. It’s a place where visitors can reflect on the history and the enduring spirit of the native peoples of the Great Plains.
