The Obélisque de Louxor, often simply referred to as the Luxor Obelisk, is an ancient Egyptian obelisk that stands in the center of the Place de la Concorde in Paris. This monument is a pair of obelisks, each over 3,000 years old, that were given to the French in 1829 by the viceroy of Egypt, Mehemet Ali .
The Luxor Obelisk is 23 meters high and weighs 222 tons, not including the 240 tons of the pedestal (Chatillon Architectes). It was carved in the 13th century B.C. under Ramses II’s reign.
This monument is not only the oldest in Paris but also one of the most iconic symbols of the city. It was erected in 1836 at the Place de la Concorde.
