Osage Warrior in the Enemy Camp

Osage Warrior in the Enemy Camp

“Osage Warrior in the Enemy Camp” is a bronze sculpture created by artist John Free Sr., which has become an iconic symbol for the Osage Nation. The sculpture depicts an Osage Indian warrior seeking to attain his tribe’s highest war honor by touching his enemy, an act known among Indigenous peoples as “Counting Coup” (Osage News; Equestrian Statue).

The statue can be found in a small park at the intersection of Kihekah St. and 6th St. in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. It was a gift from Strat and Bobbie Tolson to the community (Waymarking; HMDB).

The sculpture is not only a striking piece of art but also an important cultural artifact that commemorates the bravery and martial traditions of the Osage warriors. The presence of this statue on the Osage Nation campus and in Pawhuska serves as a reminder of the Osage people’s rich history and their enduring legacy (Instagram).
