The statue of Birger Jarl is a prominent monument in Stockholm, Sweden, dedicated to the historical figure considered to be the founder of the city. Birger Jarl, which translates to “Earl Birger,” was a powerful Swedish statesman and a member of the House of Bjelbo who is credited with the founding of Stockholm in the mid-13th century as part of his efforts to consolidate Sweden and enhance its defense against foreign invaders.

The statue itself is located at Riddarholmen, an island in the old town (Gamla Stan) area of Stockholm, near the Birger Jarls torg (Birger Jarl Square). It stands as a proud symbol of the city’s origins and is often one of the first historical monuments that visitors encounter when exploring Stockholm.

Sculpted by Bengt Erland Fogelberg, the statue was inaugurated in 1854 and depicts Birger Jarl in a commanding pose, looking out over the city he is reputed to have established. The figure is clad in medieval garb, with a sword at his side, reflecting his role as a warrior and a statesman.

The monument not only serves to honor the memory of Birger Jarl but also acts as an emblem of Stockholm’s rich medieval history. It reminds citizens and visitors alike of the city’s early beginnings and the historical figures who played pivotal roles in its development. As a result, the statue of Birger Jarl has become an iconic image associated with Stockholm and is an integral part of the city’s cultural heritage.
