The Shipyard Worker

The Shipyard Worker

MHCQ+X87 Copenhagen, Denmark

A sculpture, a shipyard worker in a boiler suit, created by the artist Jens Galschiøt, now stands on the Børnehus Bridge at Christianshavns Torv, gazing out over the canal. At his feet sits a worn old leather bag with a thermos from Brugsen (a Danish supermarket chain), and in his pockets and belt are cigarettes, tools, and gloves. With over 8,000 employees, B&W (Burmeister & Wain, a famous Danish shipbuilding company) shaped the entire Christianshavn and Refshaleøen areas. It has surprised us that all the life that the shipyard and machine factory brought with them is now completely invisible in the public space. There are not many workers among the capital’s sculptures, and with the B&W worker, we honor those people who worked in smoke, noise, and muck under conditions that are hard to imagine today,” says Lis Schertiger-Nielsen from the initiative group.
